How to Use Your iPhone as a Noise-Cancelling Microphone
Did you know your iPhone has a built-in microphone feature that can make your voice sound much clearer in noisy environments?
You don't necessarily need to buy an expensive microphone just to reduce background noise. On supported iPhones and apps, Apple's Voice Isolation mode can prioritize your voice and reduce surrounding sounds.
This can be useful when recording TikToks, making video calls, recording tutorials, or creating content in a noisy environment.
How to Turn On Voice Isolation on Your iPhone
Step 1: Start your recording or call
Open the app you want to use for your recording or call.
For example, you can use a supported recording app, FaceTime, or another compatible third-party app.

Step 2: Open Control Center
While the recording or call is active, swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone screen to open Control Center.

Step 3: Open the App Controls
At the top of Control Center, tap the controls for the app currently using your microphone.
Depending on the app, this may appear as the app's name followed by Controls.

Step 4: Select Voice Isolation
Under Audio & Video, look for Mic Mode.
Select:
Voice Isolation
This mode prioritizes your voice and blocks or reduces ambient background noise.

Step 5: Start recording
Return to your app and continue recording.
Your iPhone will now use Voice Isolation for that supported app. The setting applies to the app you're currently using and can remain selected for that app until you change it.

What Does Voice Isolation Actually Do?
Voice Isolation is designed to make your speech clearer by reducing unwanted sounds around you.
For example, it can be useful if you're recording content while there is:
Traffic noise
People talking nearby
Air-conditioning or fan noise
General background noise
Other environmental sounds
However, it isn't the same as having a professional studio microphone. Your recording environment, distance from the phone and the quality of the microphone still matter.
Voice Isolation vs Wide Spectrum
Apple provides different microphone modes depending on the app and situation.
Voice Isolation: Best when you want your voice to stand out and background sounds reduced.
Standard: Uses normal voice processing.
Wide Spectrum: Keeps more of the surrounding sound instead of filtering it out.
For TikTok tutorials, voiceovers and talking-head videos, Voice Isolation is usually the mode you want to try first.
Which iPhones Support It?
Apple says Voice Isolation is supported on iPhone XR, iPhone XS and newer models, although availability also depends on the app and iOS version. Voice Isolation for audio/video recording apps such as Voice Memos requires iOS 26 or later.
Quick Tip
If you don't see Voice Isolation, don't assume your iPhone doesn't support it. The feature has to be supported by the particular app you're using.
Also make sure the app has permission to use your microphone:
Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
Then make sure the relevant app is enabled.
Final Tip
Before recording an important video, make a short test recording first. Listen to it with headphones and check whether your voice sounds clear.
Your iPhone may already have the microphone feature you need — you just have to know where to find it.
